WINES

Nowadays Sardinia counts 15 IGT wines (Indicazione geografica tipica) and 18 DOC wines (Denominazione di origine controllata), including a DOCG: Vermentino di Gallura. The most well-known local wine grape varieties are Cannonau, Carignano and Vermentino, but the region offers the likes of Vernaccia, Bovale, Nuragus, Malvasia, Moscato, Cagnulari, wines that are distributed locally in specific areas. They represent the soul and the traditional cultural heritage of the region. This wide variety of grape types allows for a wide range of wines, including sparkling wines, both young and more mature whites, rosés and reds, and sweet liqueur wines and ‘passiti’. At the 2019 Vinitaly 50 Sardinian wines received awards. Among those with the highest scores, there were three varieties of Vermentino di Gallura (Canayli 2018 – Branu 2018 – Karagnanj 2017) and a red (Serranu) which won “best Italian wine”.
