CETACEANS

Between Sardinia and Corsica, off the coast of the Gallura region and not far from the “Bocche di Bonifacio”, you will find the underwater canyon of Caprera, located 15-30 miles from Capo Ferro (Arzachena). This is an important area for Mediterranean cetaceans and for all sea creatures. The ‘Santuario Pelagos’, the large marine area born in 1999 from an international agreement between France, Italy and Monaco, has the aim of protecting marine mammals. Here you can catch a sight of 7 out of 8 cetacean species found in the western Mediterranean basin. This surprising diversity appears in very few other areas in the ‘mare nostrum’. The canyon is a feeding and breeding area for all the species. And it is precisely in these marine areas that it carries out its activity of research SEAME Sardinia (onlus).
